Tinkerbell Half Marathon, Part 2

A few months ago I began to tell the tale of the Tinkerbell Half Marathon, but clearly become distracted...

Danny and I went back to our hotel after the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour and relaxed in the hotel for most of the evening. We did go out to dinner with two of Danny’s cousins which was very fun and a nice distraction from worrying about how the race would go the next day.

We woke up early (for us), got ready, and went outside to catch the race shuttle. Being on the shuttle was nice because we were able to scope out some of the other race outfits and start getting mentally ready. The shuttle dropped us off where the Disney busses normally drop folks off for a day at the park, but the race start area was all the way over by Paradise Pier Hotel so despite catching a shuttle we still had a bit of walking to do. The pre-race area was hopping with music, bag checks, and people warming up. We didn’t linger in this area long, but did manage to stop and take a few pictures of people with great costumes!

We then proceeded to the corrals. We hung out in this area wearing our trash bags to stay warm since it was still pretty early in the morning. Before we knew it the race was beginning and we made our way onto the streets on Anaheim. Running up a highway on-ramp was not very fun but I am happy we did it at the beginning of the race and not near the end. Eventually we ran into Disney California Adventure where Danny and I both took advantage of the bathrooms near the Carthay Circle Theater. Next came Disneyland and it was pretty magical to run up Main Street towards the castle! The sun had just started to rise at this point and just in time to go back stage. The backstage area housed the Disneyland Trains, some parade vehicles, and even a few extra parts to classic attractions. It was both disturbing and fascinating to see a hallowed out elephant body from the Jungle Cruise just hanging out. Danny tried to take a few pictures back here but we were in a good running groove – also a cast member was standing there. Oh well! The grounds crew for Disneyland was out in full force and had hung a banner encouraging the runners and cheering us on. This was yet another example of the pixie dust that Disney is known for! After exiting backstage it was time to refuel with Clif Blocks and get a few pictures. First we met Clarabelle Cow in Toon Town then we met the Lost Boys in Fantasyland.

After leaving Disneyland we proceeded to run around the city. This was not very enjoyable to me. There was nothing very noteworthy about this portion of the race. I did appreciate the local high school cheer/dance teams and bands but there were many long stretches of houses and businesses that were pretty boring. At Mile 8 I told Danny that I will finish this race and also do the Wine & Dine Half so that we could earn our Coast to Coast medals, but after that I didn’t want to do races greater than a 10k. This was just a little too long for my liking. Maybe if I trained and was able to run more (aka finish sooner) I wouldn’t have been so bored, but the reality is that I am not very fast and don’t think I have the patience to become faster. I like being able to complete my goals and it doesn’t matter how long it takes.

Getting back to the parks was the home stretch and we went back into Disney California Adventure where we ran past the Pixar Play Parade, World of Color Fountains, and then out to Downtown Disney. There was a little winding through parking lot action right before the finish line and I was happy to see the end approaching. As Danny and I crossed the finish line I held back a few tears of joy. I couldn’t believe that we did it! Having the medal placed around my neck felt great!

We finished the morning with Disney snack boxes, stretching, and end of the race pictures. The snack boxes came with cute little Peter Pan tote bags that Danny and I both use for lunch sacks from time to time. Walking back to our hotel on Katella was by far the worst part. After the adrenaline wore off I was pretty beat and even had to stop and sit down for minute to rub my feet. We also had to go through the park back check area which just seemed cruel to have to wait in line after running 13.1 miles! We both took a quick ice bath and nap after the race and then went to the parks for the rest of the day. The one thing I will never race without is Tiger Balm. Just a little over all our sore joints and muscles and we were mobile again. Our reward for finishing was lunch at the Carthay Circle! It was delicious as always but they did take my beloved pulled pork off the menu, boo!

My goals for the race were to not get picked up by the sweepers and to finish the race. I am proud to say that I was able to do both! Our time was not amazing, being just over three hours, but I feel it was very respectable for our first half marathon, especially since we didn’t train for it. One of my big worries was blisters and chaffing and I was pleased to not have an issue with either. I was really able to listen to my body and not hurt myself in a major or minor way.

If you are thinking to yourself – can I do a half marathon? The answer is yes. If you are worried, Disney is the perfect, encouraging environment to do it in, too! We will see how the Wine and Dine goes and if I really will give up half marathons or not. It has been cool to see Disney adding so many 10k races to the race schedule because I feel that is the right distance for me but Danny can do halfs if he wants to and we still get a Disney vacation out of it!

5 for 5: Night Shows

This month’s 5 for 5 is all about the night shows. We had originally talked about doing a more general ranking of shows but realized that with the variety of “shows” you can find at Disney it might be nice to distinguish between night shows and the rest such as the stage shows and spontaneous/less formal shows.

Danny’s 5:

1. Remember Dream's Come True - an EXTREMELY brilliant and well put together firework show that is more than a show, but a tribute to Walt Disney and Disneyland!

2. Halloween Screams - a fun new take on Halloween and Fireworks that embraces Halloween, Disney Villains and new technology (with the flying of Zero over Sleeping Beauty Castle)!

3. World of Color - Another brilliant example embracing technology with the lack of people power (I.E. needing characters to perform, as in Parades, Fantasmic, etc...) or the need to shut down a part of the park (I.E. Fantasyland during the fireworks); while embracing new brilliant story telling on a new medium.  Plus it's SO beautiful!

4. Illuminations: Reflections of Earth - A beautiful firework show that doesn't scream "DISNEY," but tells a beautiful and wonderful story!

5. Main Street Electrical Parade - It's a BRILLIANT, TIMELESS and WONDERFUL classic!

Jaime’s 5:

1.      Halloween Screams: Having only see the Halloween fireworks show at Disneyland I do not have much to say about how it compares to the Halloween show at WDW. With that said, I love that Zero the Ghost Dog from Nightmare Before Christmas does a flyover and that you get to see and celebrate many of the classic villains from Disney’s past!

2.      World of Color: I love that this show is unlike any other, pretty much anywhere. While I love fireworks (in a form or location) I really love that this show is special to California Adventure, embraces Walt’s vision for moving forward and innovating, and is simply a visual stunner. The only drawback is the viewing area is not designed for short people (child, or vertically challenged such as myself) so you really have to stand to see the show and after a long day at the parks that can make me grumpy.

3.      Fantasmic! I really appreciate the mix of Disney storytelling, characters, music, and pyrotechnics. As per usual I find myself a bigger fan of the Disneyland version than the WDW version but like that at Hollywood Studios there is a large auditorium with plenty of seating. At Disneyland you sometimes need to stake out a spot around the Rivers of America hours in advance and frankly I would rather be on a ride!

4.      Illuminations: I like that Illuminations feels true to Epcot, where the show takes place. While there is much to be said about “Disney” and having classic characters and music be a part of pretty much everything I really appreciate that Illuminations doesn’t have that. What it does have is a celebration of people and cultures from around the world and an inspiring message of unity. Another perk: Epcot is huge and there is plenty of great viewing locations where you can sit down and enjoy the show!

5.      Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Fireworks at Disney World: I was not sure of the exact name of this show, but we have had the privilege to enjoy two MVMCP celebrations (2010 and 2012) and I have really enjoyed both fireworks shows. Being a Chicago native and transplanted to Colorado I think there might just be something about wearing shorts and a t-shirt, outdoors, in December and being full of holiday magic without being cold? Who knows?

Pre Trip Report: January 2013

Here are the Top 5 things we are excited for/anticipating:

1. Participating and completing the Tinker Bell ½ Marathon:
We have made a commitment to each other to become more fit people and we have used runDisney as an excuse to become more active and fit people.  With our love for Disney Parks and their willingness to help us get there (and being feminists) we have committed to participating in one race geared towards women (the Tink ½) and another race to make sure we achieve our fitness goal.  Also we will get a sweet Coast to Coast Challenge Medal in the process!

2. runDisney Costumes:
We have participated in 2 previous runDisney races and have never dressed up for them.  However we have always wanted to, and have seen some brilliant, beautiful and amazing costumes . Some are practical and others are not so, but still fun and that is what counts!  With that said, we have found a happy medium (and yes we will both be wearing women’s running clothes/costumes – men’s running attire doesn’t come in fun colors) and will reveal them soon!

3. Walk in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps Tour:
Danny got Jaime tickets to do the Walk in Walt’s Disneyland Footsteps Tour at Disneyland Park, which takes you behind the scenes of Walt Disney’s Disneyland; what he was thinking, feeling and dreaming when creating the Happiest Place on Earth.  This is a 3 hour behind the scenes tour with a possible sneak peak into Walt Disney’s Private Apartment above the Firehouse on Main Street U.S.A. and Club 33 – the infamous private Disneyland Club.  We are thoroughly excited to walk in Walt’s footsteps.

4. Limited Time Magic:
We will get to participate in 2 Limited Time Magic events while at Disneyland Resort.  The 1st will be a the Golden Horseshoe Review Salute – which is a revival of the long-running show Golden Horseshoe Review, which was personally created by Walt Disney. This was also his favorite show and a place he would take his wife Lillian for dates.  We think this will be GREAT and exciting to participate in.  We will also get to see the Bayou Bash, which brings back a fun show in New Orleans Square with characters from the Princess and the Frog.  This should also be fun to participate in!

5. Vacationing together:
We love our friends, our family and our puppy!  However we know we are the best people for each other to vacation with because we do what we want, when we want and go at our own pace and are generally very synced with each other.  This will be our last foreseeable vacation together for a while so we are going to bask in it!  As you may have read in a previous post the Disneyland Resort is a very special place to us.  It will be nice to be in our special place, get to see special features, complete a half marathon, and just savor in the magic with each other and create a few new memories!

The Disneyland Corn Dog Cart Review

The Disneyland Corn Dog is something we wanted to try for a long time.  Key word, Disneyland Corn Dog. Not Disneyland Resort Corn Dog, but Disneyland Corn Dog.

The reason I state this is because I, (Danny) had never had a Corn Dog from Disneyland Resort until our past trip in Summer 2012.  I have wanted to try a Disneyland Resort Corn Dog from the Corn Dog Castle at Disney California Adventure since it opened during the re-imagination of the park.  However, Jaime has tried a Disneyland Corn Dog from Disneyland Park, and was not blown away by it.  Why?  She violated the cardinal rule – she let it cool down.  However she had some hope to retry it.  So I gave in and tried (okay lets be real, insisted, we get a Corn Dog), from the Corn Dog Cart at Disneyland Park…

How was it you ask?  AMAZING!  See the pictures throughout this post and you will clearly notice we had no picture proof of how good the 3-4 Corn Dogs we got from the Corn Dog Cart were, because we inhaled them.

Simply said – just get one.  And eat it right away.  And than eat another.  Yum!

…It was all started by a mouse

The first time Jaime and I traveled together was in the fall of 2009, when we went out to her Cousin Amy and Dave’s wedding in Orange County, California.  I went as Jaime’s date and we had a blast.  We had decided that while were there, the day after the wedding we would go to Disneyland - since it was conveniently in the neighborhood.  This was Jaime’s first ever trip to Disneyland (and a Disney Park) and my second trip to Disneyland (my first trip being when I was about 5-6 years old).  So need less to say, this was a very special trip for us both.  Little did we know how special it would be in our the tale of our story…

When we got there, all I could keep thinking was, “how is this park so small?”  I kept saying this because I kept comparing it to Walt Disney World in Florida, which I had been to three times (at the time, hahah), and which is huge in land mass.

Now while I still had my clouded vision of Walt Disney greatness, Jaime helped me let loose.  We both let loose and had a blast at Disneyland.  We were laughing, enjoying the delicious food and having the best of times.  I felt like during that trip to Disneyland, we truly learned to “trust each other.”  More importantly though, I felt like we had fallen in love there!

She had no idea...
We have since visited Disneyland four times, and are planning a fifth trip in January 2013 (we will be running the Tinker Bell ½ Marathon during this trip).  We have also visited Walt Disney World two times, with a third trip right around the corner in November 2012 (we will be enjoying the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival and running in Mickey’s Jingle Jungle 5k).  I like to think this clearly shows to not only ourselves, but also the world, that aside from us being clearly Walt Disney Obsessed, that Disneyland (and really Disney Parks) are our special place.  And just like Walt Disney’s story with theme parks bringing fantasy to reality, our fantasy wonderland began at Disneyland!

Therefore, I felt no better place to give Jaime (and us really) a ring that was simple in nature – a plain band from Tiffany & Co. (Jaime's Aunt works there, so really I had no choice but to choose a Tiffany & Co. ring, but lets be honest, is Tiffany's a hard choice, hahah) – showing the world we live simple lives and like to have fun with each other, our families and our friends.  I also felt that it was important that we let our actions speak for us, rather than lettings someone or something speak for us; just like Walt Disney did with his films, TV shows, theme parks and so much more.  I felt the place where it truly started was the only appropriate place to give Jaime the ring that I felt was a symbol of us, together forever as The Happiest Couple on Earth, at The Happiest Place on Earth – Disneyland.  And a plain, yet elegant band would only further illustrate this story.

I felt that while Disneyland was the best (and most obvious place) to give Jaime our rings, I felt it was important to remind her of how I felt, and saw, our story began, which was at Disneyland.  Walt Disney has been notably quoted for saying, “…It was all started by a mouse.”  And I wanted to tell Jaime that I felt like our story started with a mouse.

My ultimate goal with this ring presentation was to get Mickey Mouse to present us with our rings.  I contacted the folks at the Disneyland Resort to see if this was possible.  They told me that they couldn’t get Mickey Mouse to do this, however they could make sure he was “in the neighborhood” where I did give her the rings…
So I had to choose the neighborhood.

Instead of choosing to give her the ring at Disneyland, I choose to give her the ring at Disney California Adventure; the second Disney park at the Disneyland resort, located next to the original Disneyland.  Why?  While both Jaime and I had been to Disneyland before, neither had never been to Disney California Adventure until the summer of 2011.  Before this, I had been to all the Walt Disney World Parks.  And we had been to Disneyland Park.  Never had either of us been to Disney California Adventure – together or separate.

This park is dedicated to the State of California, and the California Walt Disney would have seen as a young man arriving there with aspiring dreams and big ideas.  It has undergone it struggles, like Walt himself – and more recently a renovation, or reimagination (however you look at it).  One important key aspect is that there has been an instillation of a statue of a young Walt Disney, in his mid 20’s with his luggage and a fully animated early drawing of (the pie eyed) Mickey Mouse.  This statue is called “Storytellers,” and is located at the front of the park on Buena Vista Street, which led to all of Walt Disney’s dreams coming true – and Jaime and my dreams, too!  This to me was the place to give Jaime the ring because, like Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse, Jaime and I have so much hope for the future, and see so much together.  Next to this stature is a plaque that reads a quote from Walt Disney that reads, “We’re just getting started.”

So with this story in place (more like laid out to my crazy mind and to be told to Jaime), and Mickey Mouse arranged to be in the neighborhood…  I did it!  I lied for the betterment of Jaime’s surprise (shocking), and told her there was a show I wanted to see by the Storyteller’s statue, at the time Mickey Mouse was to be there and gave her the rings.  The Disneyland representatives had a million (okay five) camera folk there and took a bunch of photos and gave us Mickey Mouse Glow with the Show Ears (which ROCK) and brilliant fastpasses to World of Color.

It was all stated by a mouse…  And love!

8.10.2012

Why we’re MountainEars! A view through my Mickey (or maybe soon to be Oswald) Ears!

So Jaime has posted a lot about us as MountainEars and I would like to expand on that post, to give you my views on our Disney Parks experience!

I wanted to specifically post on the MountainEar name!  Mountains within the Disney Parks, and within our lives, are pretty significant and historical from a few different viewpoints.  First, Mountains within the Disney Park’s are pretty much everywhere and cannot be avoided.  There are the California Mountains – such as Matterhorn Mountain at Disneyland Park to Grizzly Peak at Disney California Adventure and the Mountains at Walt Disney World in Florida, such as Expedition Everest.  And, we cannot avoid the obvious duplicate (but also infamous) Mountains – such as Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, etc… While theses my seem like “duplicates” to many, the discerning Disney fan understands that each mountain has its own special appeal and no two are exactly alike.

Secondly, Mountains within our lives are also pretty significant.  The obvious is for Danny, as he was born and raised within the State of Colorado, which is home to the Rocky Mountains.  The Chicago Skylines, which Jaime likes to call “urban mountains”, housed Jaime until she moved to Colorado for college where she and Danny met.  They still live in Colorado, and fell in love in Colorado, but they would agree that their love was solidified at Disneyland on Matterhorn Mountain, while laughing at nothing but life, love, peace and happiness.

Now, while Danny and Jaime are landlocked from Disney Parks, living in Colorado, they sill love to find ways to adventure to Disney!  Their future goals are to travel to an abroad Disney Park, such as Disneyland Paris or Tokyo Disney Sea, stay at all the Walt Disney World hotels at least once and show their puppa – Rocco, the most love he can have!  They have accomplished one of those goals – with loving Rocco and, as Walt Disney would say, “Keep(ing) moving forward” to the rest of their goals.

Peace,

DJS

Pre-Trip Report, August 2012

In four days from now Danny and I will be merrily on our way to Disneyland for a quick summer trip. With Cars Land officially opened and the recently completed refurbishment of the Matterhorn we figured this would be a perfect late-summer getaway before school starts back up and the opportunity to go dwindles away.

Our travel style is usually very laid back, especially in the 'land. What is there to rush for... what is there to rush to? Don't get me wrong, WDW is great, but at Disneyland you don't need to worry about all your precious ADRs and fighting the crowds to get across the cavernous park for the next show time. Disneyland is compact, efficient and casual. You can sit down, relax and people watch and don't feel like you are missing out. With that said, our trip will be casual. We have two dining reservations but will otherwise go where the pixie dust will take us.

Day 1: We arrive on Tuesday around 10 where we will pick up our rental car and check into the hotel (offsite) before heading over to Disneyland. The first thing we plan to do is head straight to the Matterhorn Mountain! Well... maybe we will get a churro first. We are so excited to see the new snow on the mountain, check out the queue, and see what they have done to the bobsleds. I loved the old bobsleds! Were they awkward? Totally. That was part of the beauty of them.

Later in the evening we will be going to Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square (first time) to try their much raved about Pomme Frites and Beignets. While we would certainly be content eating apps and dessert I don't think our tummies will be. I guess we will have to see during the wrap-up report about what we did for an entree.

That right there, ladies and gentlemen, is our official itinerary for day one of our trip. Everything else will unfold naturally. Sure there are things we are excited to do, ride or see but nothing is a "must-do" per say. I am pumped to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad since it was down in the World on our last trip. Danny needs to get a churro and a Mickey ice cream bar before the trip is over.

Day 2: We have Early Morning Hours (EMH) in Disney California Adventure thanks to our annual passes. First thing in the morning means we get to hit Cars Land before the rush of the general public. I know I can safely say for the both of us that we are so excited to see the details that have been ingrained in this new land, ride on the new rides and get to try new foods, especially the ones that come in cones! After we get our fill of Cars we will hop around DCA at our leisure. Before our day at DCA is over, however, we do have one more thing we are REALLY looking forward to: reservations at the Carthay Circle Restaurant! We have been drooling over the menu since it was released and are excited to try the Sriracha Duck Wings, among others! Rumor has it that we may even get to see the fireworks with our dinner if we play our cards right.

Since we have the easy ability to hop we may go back to Disneyland for a while while the morning rush hits DCA and then go back to Adventure after lunch when the crowds start to thin out for their midday siestas.

Day 3: Once again we have EMH but this time for Dinseyland. This will be our chance to really make sure we get to ride all of our favorites without stressing about lines. Once the public starts to get overwhelming we may go back to DCA for a change of pace. That will be determined while we are there. It is just so nice knowing that it would be perfectly reasonable to do so, unlike at WDW where hopping requires taking about an hour out of your day to get to your next destination.

Sadly, this is where our trip ends and we go back to reality. Our flight is for 6pm out of John Wayne so we will probably need to leave around 3 to return our rental car and get through security. Since we knew it would be a quick trip we both decided we will only pack what can fit into a backpack to not have to worry about checking luggage.

I can't wait to do a wrap-up about our trip with lots of pictures and details! In coming posts we hope to chronicle some our past trips, too!
